Title:News in the Time of Globalisation: a Study of CCTV News (English) and BBC World News TV
Keynote Speaker:Vivien Marsh, Doctoral Candidate, Faculty of Media, Arts and Design, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Westminster, UK
Abstract:
In the crowded global marketplace for international English-language television news, is a universal standard of journalism developing – or is there still an audience for channels that communicate national perspectives to other countries? Can news programmes “look global” yet convey the values of a specific country? Do they have the potential to enhance that country’s “soft power”?
Over decades, the BBC has built up a reputation for impartial, balanced reporting, but it is also identified with the globally dominant Anglo-American style of news and the liberal-democratic values that go with it. CCTV, the Chinese state broadcaster, is now several years into a “going-out” venture in which it is seeking to make China’s voice heard in the world and offer an alternative English-language news agenda.
The face of the BBC’s global TV news in English has in recent years changed markedly: nowadays, journalists from all over the world appear on screen, including – especially – reporters from non-British backgrounds with local languages and local knowledge. CCTV’s expansion and global recruitment has given it an instant international – sometimes even Western –“look”. Do these staffing revolutions change the two broadcasters’ news values or the messages they convey? Is “soft power” still possible or even desirable with multinational journalistic teams?
Material for this comparative and expository presentation is drawn from the researcher’s 25 years as a BBC global news journalist – including several years at the BBC’s 24-hour international television news service, where she was part of the launch team. It also contains perspectives from her PhD research which compares the news output of CCTV News English and BBC World News TV.
